Message from the Head of the Department

The department of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery at Dokkyo Medical University Koshigaya Hospital (current Saitama Medical Center) was established in 1984. The current, Cardiovascular Surgery department at Dokkyo Medical University Saitama Medical Center was newly formed in April 2018.
We are treating adult cardiac and vascular diseases and have been performing about 400 surgical procedures including more than 200 major surgeries for the heart or thoracic aorta every year.
We perform surgeries that considers the patient's postoperative QOL and apply minimally invasive cardiac surgery (MICS) for valvular heart disease, and endovascular aortic aneurysm repair (TEVAR or EVAR) for aortic disease. Furthermore, we are aggressively performing transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) for aortic stenosis and Mitral Clip for mitral regurgitation in high-risk patients by cooperating with the department of Cardiology, Anesthesiology, Intensive Care Medicine, Rehabilitation Medicine, Medical Engineer, and Nursing team (Heart Team).

Activities

1. Clinical work

Targets to treat

  • Ischemic heart diseases
    Acute coronary syndrome
    Angina Pectoris
Myocardial infarction and its mechanical complications
  • Valvular Heart diseases
Aortic valve disease: aortic stenosis, aortic regurgitationMitral valve disease:
    mitral stenosis, mitral regurgitation
    Tricuspid valve disease: tricuspid regurgitation
  • Aortic diseases
    Thoracic and abdominal aortic aneurysms
    Aortic dissection
  • Myocardial diseases
    Idiopathic dilated cardiomyopathy
    Ischemic cardiomyopath
  • Cardiac tumors
    Cardiac myxoma, etc
  • Peripheral vascular diseases
    Arteriosclerosis obliterans
    Acute limb ischemia
    Varicose vein
    Vascular access
  • Congenital heart disease
    Atrial septal defect
    Ventricular septal defect
    Patent aortic duct
    Other adult congenital heart disease

2. Advanced surgical techniques

  • Off-pump coronary artery bypass grafting (OPCAB)
  • Minimally invasive cardiac surgery (MICS)
  • Trans-catheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI)
  • Trans-catheter mitral valve repair (MitraClip®)
  • Endo-vascular aortic repair
  • Endo-vascular treatment for peripheral artery diseases
  • Left ventricular assist devices (LVAD)

3. Education

School of Medicine:

Lectures for medical students
Clinical clerkship (CC) for 5th/6th grade medical students
Students spend 1-4 weeks in our department. Each student is required to be in charge of a patient, plan the treatment, present the plan at the preoperative conference, attend the operation, and present the postoperative course at the morning conference every day.

Research Field

  • Development and improvement of minimally invasive cardiac surgical techniques.
  • Analysis of frailty of elder patients undergoing cardiac surgery in terms of short and long term prognosis
  • Establishment of indications of tricuspid surgery in patients undergoing left-sided valvular surgery
