Department of Psychiatry

Head of the Office: Hiroshi Ihara, MD, PhD

Message from the Professor of the Department

In 2008, Dokkyo Medical University changed the name of the Department of Psychiatry at Koshigaya Hospital from “Seishinka” to “Kokorono Shinryoka”, which literally means the “Department of Mental Health”. The new name reflects our mission to treat not only severe mental disorders but also milder forms, including clinically subthreshold dysfunctions. Since then, our Department has treated a wide range of clinical categories. They include not only conventional and psychotic categories, such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and major depression, but also recently increasing, non-psychotic categories, such as mild depression, dysthymia, adjustment disorder, anxiety disorder and so on. Moreover, we have accepted cases with neurodevelopmental disorders like autism-spectrum disorder and attention-deficit hyperactive disorder. Furthermore, cases with rare genetic conditions like Prader-Willi syndrome have been referred to our Department, for the management of their behavioral and psychological symptoms. The number of outpatients visiting our Department has increased dramatically, by 2019, the number of outpatients had increased more than six-fold compared to 2007.
When it comes to research, a wide range of clinical studies have been conducted, including neuropsychology, psychopathology (philosophy of psychiatry), psychiatric ethics, child psychiatry and forensic psychiatry. Behavioral and psychological aspects of Prader-Willi syndrome have been intensively studied as a series of clinical research, which has produced six doctoral degree holders.
The number of department staff has increased, from only two (one psychiatrist and one psychologist) in 2008 to around 16 members including part-time doctors in 2025. In 2020 our Department was designated as one of the main facilities for post-graduate education in psychiatry by the Japan Medical Specialty Board and the Japanese Society of Psychiatry and Neurology. So far, we have been accepting a few trainee psychiatrists every year. Whilst the history of our Department is short, we are proud of our accomplishment to foster a number of full-fledged psychiatrists and supply clinical human resources to communities.
