Department of Cardiology

Head of the Office: Isao Taguchi MD, PhD

Message from the Head of the Office

The department of Cardiology in Dokkyo Medical University Saitama Medical Center was established in 1984. Our department diagnoses and treats patients with cardiovascular disease, including peripheral artery disorders. We are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, since cardiovascular disease is life threatening and requires immediate attention.

Activities

・Percutaneous intervention therapies
Our department is a leading hospital in the interventional treatment of cardiovascular and peripheral artery disease.

・Treatment of cardiac arrhythmia (Catheter ablation and device implantation)
We are ranked as one of the top hospitals in Japan for a number of percutaneous therapies for cardiac arrhythmia, known as catheter ablation.

・Valvular Intervention
The number of patients needing surgical treatment due to severe valvular heart disease is increasing. Recently, surgical indications of less invasive therapy, such as transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) and Mitral Clip, have been expanded. We are actively treating patients with those less invasive procedures by cooperating with the cardiovascular surgery team.

 ・Education
School of Medicine:

1st year Experience “Percutaneous intervention therapies”,
“Treatment of cardiac arrhythmia”, and “Valvular
intervention” for 4 months each.
Echocardiogram training.

Research Field

Our cardiology group provides the latest and advanced treatments for a wide range of cardiovascular diseases. We are confident that the treatment will be done safely and to the highest standards. As well as providing treatment, we are also conducting clinical research for future patients in need of cardiac treatment.

・Ischemic Heart Disease Group
The percutaneous coronary intervention of ischemic heart disease especially using coronary artery stents has developed over the last decade. Our group performs the latest treatment which is a combined use of the drug-eluting stent (DES) and drug coating balloon (DCB).

 ・Cardiac Arrhythmia Group
The Arrhythmia group provides the latest treatments to patients with both atrial and ventricular arrhythmia. Especially, the patients who have atrial fibrillation (AF) and suffer from palpitations and shortness of breath are rapidly increasing. In treatments of AF, we are able to offer several options of electrophysiological procedures, such as radiofrequency catheter ablation therapy (RFCA) and balloon-based ablation. Regarding balloon-based ablation, we can perform three types of ablation, Cryoballoon ablation, Hotballoon ablation, and Laser ablation. In the ventricular arrhythmias, we also perform the latest treatment using the 3D mapping system (CARTO system, NavX system, Rhythmia system) and approaching from both endocardium and epicardium.

・Valvular Intervention Group (Cooperating with cardiovascular surgery group)
Transcatheter therapy of valvular disease takes advantage in being less invasive (without the need of open chest and cardiopulmonary bypass) and having a faster recovery. This treatment is especially beneficial in elderly patients who will be at high risk in heart surgery. The role of echocardiography is important in this procedure, and we have experienced doctors in the team who can manage complex cases.

・Total management of arteriosclerosis obliterans (ASO) and critical limb ischemia (CLI)
The number of patients suffering from arteriosclerosis obliterans (ASO) and critical limb ischemia (CLI) is increasing. The causes of this disease are varied, and we cooperate with the other departments in the hospital for treating and giving total care for the patients; Cardiovascular surgery, dermatology, plastic surgery, diabetic physician, nephrology, orthopedics, and department of rehabilitation.

Characteristics of the section

Cardiology is a medical subspecialty related to cardiovascular disease. In particular, our department treats the patient who has ischemic heart disease, valvular heart disease, cardiac arrhythmia, peripheral artery disease, and thrombotic disease. Please consider visiting our institute if you are concerned with symptoms such as “shortness of breath”, “chest pain”, “palpitations” “intermittent claudication”, and “leg edema”
