Department of Pathology

Head of the Office: Shinichi Ban, MD, PhD

Message from the Head of the Department

Our diagnostic pathology department started in 1984 when Dokkyo Medical University Saitama Medical Center, formerly called Dokkyo Medical University Koshigaya Hospital, was established, with three department heads (Yoshiomi Mori, Yoshihiko Ueda, and Shinichi Ban) until now. Our primary mission is a contribution to the clinical practice of the hospital through pathological diagnosis, including histopathology, cytopathology, intraoperative consultation, and autopsy. Recently, further crucial roles of the diagnostic pathology department have been required in advanced medical treatment, such as companion diagnosis for molecular target agents, transplantation, and cancer genomic medicine. Besides, the purpose of autopsy seems to shift to the evaluation of clinical practice rather than academic interest. In any situations, we believe that mutual communication between pathologists and clinicians is mandatory and becomes increasingly important to improve the practice. Our daily pathological practice is also the field of our research activities as well as the field of education of undergraduate students and clinical trainees.

Characteristics of the section

Our staff does not directly touch the management of patients. However, the pathological diagnosis of specimens obtained from various sites of a patient, submitted from plural clinical departments separately, and submitted repeatedly, serves essential and integrated information about diseases (final diagnosis, an indication of treatment, prognostic factors, etc.) and guides the management of patients. Here, the pathological practice is bidirectional activities between pathologists and clinicians. Actually, we usually contact clinicians and discuss cases with them as needed, and routinely have conferences with clinical departments to further develop mutual understanding and consensus. Post-mortem examination contributes to the final evaluation of the clinical practice of the hospital as well as the pathological practice of ourselves. Our department, we believe, supports the clinical practice of the hospital comprehensively.
