Department of Hematology and Oncology

Head of the Office: Kinuko Mitani, MD, PhD

Message from the Head of the Office

Our department was originally established as the Department of Hematology in 1998, and reorganized as the Department of Hematology and Oncology in 2008. As one of the clinical departments, we have three missions, namely medical care, research and education. Welcome to our home page, and please feel free to contact us, if you have any questions.

Activities

1. Medical Care

  • Treat patients with non-malignant (aplastic anemia, pure red cell aplasia, iron deficiency anemia, etc) and malignant (acute and chronic leukemia, myelodysplastic syndromes, malignant lymphoma, multiple myeloma, etc) hematological diseases.
  • Conduct chemotherapy, stem cell transplant, molecular-targeting therapy and immune therapy

2. Research Activities

  • Basic research: analysis of molecular pathogenesis in leukemia, generation of mouse model for leukemia.
  • Clinical research: predictive factor for darbepoetin alpha treatment in low-risk myelodysplastic syndromes, viral infection after stem cell transplant, etc.

 3. Education
School of Medicine:

3rd year Lecture on Hematology
4th year Lecture on Hematology
5th year Bed Side Learning (BSL)
6th year General Lecture on Hematology

Research Field:

  • Analysis of molecular pathogenesis and development of molecular therapies in RUNX1-EVI1 type leukemia.
  • Comprehensive analysis of gene mutations in hematological malignancies.
  • Establishment of human leukemia cell line.
  • Identification of Herpes virus reactivation-inducing factors.
