About us
The thoracic surgery department began in July 1974 when the university hospital opened, but at the beginning, there was no medical service of cardiovascular surgery in the thoracic surgery department. However, the second professor Koichiro Shimada, together with the cooperation of Jikei University School of Medicine and Women's Medical University, performed the first cardiac case on October 29, 1991, with a team led by Professor Yoshitaka Okamura (currently the honorary president of Wakayama Medical University). After that, the number of cases increased steadily and grew into a core facility in the north Kanto area, and in April 2010, it became independent as the "Cardiac and Vascular Surgery Course". In June of the same year, we started vascular surgery service at Dokkyo Medical University Nikko Medical Center, and now we have about 300 cases in the heart / thoracic aorta lesion and about 300 cases in the peripheral vascular lesion.
About cardiac and vascular surgery services
We provide medical care with two pillars, "cardiac surgery" and "vascular surgery".
We will perform surgery that considers the patient's postoperative QOL, minimally invasive heart and vascular surgery that is kind to the body, and team medical care centered on the Heart Center, with the goal of early rehabilitation after surgery. We provide world-class advanced cardiac and vascular surgery services.
Education and training for young surgeons
In recent years, the number of surgeons, which is one of the 3K jobs, especially cardiovascular surgeons, has decreased remarkably as in pediatrics and obstetrics. However, a survey conducted by the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare found that the percentage of cardiovascular surgeons who prioritized medical care over their own lives was overwhelmingly high. The goal is to join this group of stupid doctors and develop human resources who will lead the future of cardiac and vascular surgery in Japan and around the world. We would like to train surgeons who have the opportunity to operate from an early stage, encourage them to study abroad in Japan and overseas, and have a broad perspective as "surgeons who can cut" and who also have creative academism to create future cardiovascular surgery. The keywords are enthusiasm, sincerity, creativity, technology and harmony.
Research
Another important mission of the university is research in the cardiac and vascular surgery field. Our department is actively promoting joint research with other departments in the hospital, basic science laboratory, and out-of-hospital facilities. In the future, we will continue to conduct research that can be fed back to clinical practice to overcome clinical problems, and strive to contribute to the progress of cardiovascular surgery.

2. Education
School of Medicine:
Lectures for medical students
Subjects in clinical cardiac and vascular surgeries before clinical rotation.
Clinical clerkship for 4th/5th grade medical students
Students spend 1-4 weeks in our department. Each student is required to be in charge of a patient, plan the treatment, present the plan at the preoperative conference, attend the operation, and present the postoperative course at the morning conference every day.
The areas of our research interest cover all the fields listed above in “Targets to treat”. We have a lot of publications. (→https://dokkyo-cvs.jp/) Also, several projects are now ongoing. (→https://dokkyo-cvs.jp/)
