Adult Nursing (Acute)

Head of the Office: Sadami Momiyama, RN, PhD

Message from the Head of the Office

Adult nursing (acute) primarily targets individuals in life-threatening conditions resulting from accidents or sudden illnesses, as well as patients in the perioperative period, and their families. Our educational approach involves a comprehensive understanding of their developmental stages and physical and psychosocial needs. Students are trained to prevent complications, facilitate early recovery, alleviate distress, and support patients in reintegrating into society.

Courses Offered

1. Acute Care Nursing
This course fosters understanding of individuals and their families during the perioperative period and other acute phases. Students study nursing theories and practices related to pain management, complication prevention, and social reintegration.

2. Disaster Nursing
Students examine the effects of disasters on individuals and communities, the role of nurses throughout the disaster cycle, and interdisciplinary collaboration. Topics include common illnesses, psychological responses, and nursing care in hospitals, disaster sites, and shelters.

3. Nursing Research Methodology
This course introduces the importance and processes of nursing research. Students acquire fundamental research skills and develop the ability to independently engage in research activities.

4. Practicum in Acute Care Nursing
This practicum develops essential nursing competencies for patients before, during, and after surgery, as well as for those in acute or life-threatening conditions and their families. Training sites include emergency and critical care centers, intensive care units (ICU), and operating rooms.

Examples of Student Graduation Research Topics

  • Literature review on the experiences and emotions of patients with postoperative delirium
  • Survey on disaster preparedness among nursing students
  • Ethical dilemmas faced by nurses in supporting surrogate decision-making in critical care
  • Literature review on bereaved families of individuals who experienced sudden death in Japan
